Its always good to photograph rock bands as they know how to put on a good show. It also good to visit new venues and this was the new GLive venue in Guildford.

One of the things I love about being a photographer is the variety of work. One day a charting topping artist, the next a mountain bike race.

The race was a 70 mile cross country race in the middle of Swinley Forest, Bracknell. It gave me chance to try and produce something slightly more ‘arty’ than the usual sports photograph.

This was the second time I have photographed Professor Green. This time was in support of his second album. The crowd was jumping by the time he came onstage thanks to the warmup DJ and MC.

The High Speed 2 (HS2) is a proposed rail link which, in phase 1, will go from London to Birmingham and in phase 2 will continue onto Leeds and Manchester. It is planned that it will reduce the travel time from London to Birmingham from 1hr 12mins to 49mins. The trains will travel at up to 250mph.

The route itself is not without controversy as it will pass through the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. One community that will be heavily affected is Wendover which sits in the foot hills of the Chilterns.

Something different for me; comedy. This time it was the very funny Dr Phil Hammond doing his Rude Health Show. Dr Phil has appeared on Have I Got News For You and also writes in Private Eye as ‘MD’. His show is based on a combination of comedy, satire, medicine, politics and at times, toilet humour but all in all – very funny.

What is the best way to get over some overindulgence at New Year? Get dressed up in fancy dress, push a wheelbarrow and consume more alcohol. Well, that is what the residents of Sunninghill do to raise money for charity.

Hope you have had a good 2011 and you got everything you wanted for Christmas.

I will finish this year with one of the last pictures I took in 2011 – Sun poking through the clouds near Bournemouth.

This was a rare treat for me to travel into London for a gig. This was Kasabian at the O2 touring their new album Velociraptor.

Bit late in posting this but I recently got the chance to photograph Steeleye Span at the Concert Hall in Reading. Dispite being the only photographer, gigs like this can be a challenge. The venue is seated, so no pit, also I was told not to move around too much during the gig.

Another ex reality star – this time Lemar. Since appearing on Fame Academy in 2002, he has had 7 top ten UK singles and sold over 2 million albums (and appeared in one of the funniest Top Gear episodes).

Today, he did a short set before switching on the Bracknell Christmas lights.

What do you get when you mix over 700 Santas and an ex XFactor Contestant? It’s the Thames Hospicecare Santa Dash in Swinley Forest, Bracknell which was started by XFactor contestant Danyl Johnson.

It is interesting to see how someone’s career develops over time.

Joe McElderry won XFactor in 2009. Since then he has released in debut album, been dropped by his record label and won another reality show “Popstar to Operastar”. He was appearing at the Reading Hexagon with a mixture of his songs, classical songs and his favourites from the XFactor.

Today was a contrast of two very different jobs (both before breakfast). One was a positive news story and one was a very sad story.

The first one was the opening of a new Waitrose store. This was one in Bracknell which is where the HQ of Waitrose is. Unfortunately, the store opens at 7am so it meant a very early start. I arrived at 6:45 and we ran through some pictures of the staff before moving onto the ribbon cutting. The doors then opened and the first customers were greeted with a goodie bag and a bouquet of flowers. As the sun was just raising, I went outside to get some pictures of the store in the early morning light.

Next up was a very sad story. There had been an explosion at a house close to where I live. The elderly couple that lived there were both badly injured and were flown by air ambulance to different hospitals. At the time of writing, it is believed that a gas leak was the cause of the explosion. The explosion had completely destroyed one half of the house and remaining wall was buckled. I arrived in the morning on the day after the explosion. The demolition crew had arrived and were starting to assess how they would demolish the house before it fell down and damaged adjacent properties.

And all of that was completed by 8am………..

Imelda May is an Irish rockabilly singer. Her third album, Mayhem, brought her into the mainstream. This is the 3rd time I have photographed her, this time at the Reading Hexagon.

The High Speed 2 rail link is a proposed rail link from London to Birmingham. It will have a big affect on communities along the line. Wendover in Buckinghamshire will have the railway line pass along the edge of the village. The building of the line will have a big impact as they will have to reroute several roads and build a viaduct over another.

The Tempest Rally is a one day gravel rally across the Blackwater Valley with stages across Yately, Eversley, Ash and Aldershot. I went to one of the Eversley stages to watch the 4wd competition.

The funniest thing was the car that went along hooting the car in front as they wouldn’t let them past – see the last picture.

Its not that long since I last photographed Erasure. The last time was on the main stage at Guilfest. This time it was the Reading Hexagon. The stage setting was very gothic and great to photograph.

Another local gig, Julian Cope at the Wilde Theatre, Bracknell. I am sure that Julian does have a face but it was hidden under a mass of hair, a cap and shades.

American blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa was performing at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo as part of the UK tour.

This was a challenging job as we were on stage left which is the wrong side to shoot a right handed guitarist. Joe moved to the front of the stage for his solos so it gave me the opportunity to get some ‘arty’ shots.

Now that the sunrise times are getting a bit more respectable, I thought that I would go do to Windsor Great Park first thing this morning and photograph the mist and the rising sun. Landscape photography is always a challenge as it takes lots of visits to get the perfect conditions.

I was reasonably happy with the results from one session and it has given me more ideas for next time.

As well as taking music pictures, I take general stock photographs which are syndicated through Alamy. Today, the Daily Mail has used one of my Alamy pictures of Woking Borough Council in an article about parking charges.

Heatherwood Hospital played an important part in my life as it’s where my daughter was born. There are rumours that the PCT will be closing the hospital and services transferred to Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.

The march was to raise awareness about the possible closure. There was a lot of support from the passing public and from the staff and patients at the hospital.

Ade Edmondson is known for his appearances in The Young One and Bottom. A few years ago, he formed a punk / folk band “The Bad Shepherds”. They play punk classics such as Anarchy In The UK and I Fought The Law in a folk style and its pretty good.

They were playing at the Ascot Beer and Wine Festival which was held at Ascot Racecourse.

Emma-Lee Moss known by her stage name of Emmy The Great is on tour promoting her second album Virtue. I had photographed a couple of years ago at South Street Reading, this time it was at the Wilde Theatre, Bracknell.

Dodgy came to fame in the 1990s with their hits; Staying Out for the Summer”, “If You’re Thinking of Me”, and “Good Enough”. They are about to release a new album and this was an acoustic show ahead of their full tour.

ODi is Irish folk singer Claire Odlum. As part of her UK tour, she appeared at a Girls and Guitars night at Farnham Maltings.

Owl City is the band of Adam Young. Their biggest hit was the 2009 no.1 single “Fireflies”. They are currently touring in support of their 3rd album “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. I last photographed them back in early 2010 at the Electric Ballroom, Camden. This time was at the Shepherds Bush Empire.

David Walliams is swimming the Thames for Sports Relief. At the time of writing, he had raised over £500k.

The plan originally was to photograph him arrive in Windsor on Friday evening but due to his “Thames Tummy” he was delayed. I decided to try and photograph him around Hurley / Bisham. I caught up with him just after Hurley Lock and walked alongside to Temple Lock. As he went under a bridge, he paused to wave to his supporters.

As well as the ‘normal’ shots, I tried to get some ‘arty’ ones.

McFly are one of my favourite bands to photograph. They are full of energy and have lots of fun on stage. This time was at the Jolly Day Out on Hampton Court Green.

I lived in Sunbury for 15 years (and my parents still live there) but I have never been to Kempton Park Racecourse to watch the horse racing. Been there for the market and the fireworks but not the racing. Last night was no different as I was there to photograph ex X-Factor contestant Olly Murs but this time I did at least see a horse.

Olly is proof that not winning X-Factor is probably the best thing as he was the runner up in 2009 to Joe McElderry and so far seems to be having the better career. The last time I photographed Olly was a part of the 2009 XFactor Tour at Wembley Arena. This time he was on his own headlining the post racing concert.

After racing concerts are becoming more popular as a way of pulling in more punters. I have been covering the concerts at Ascot for the past 4 years. For the past 3 years they have featured artists from the Here And Now stable.

If you haven’t heard of Here And Now, then you will have heard of their artists. Basically they are promoters who have a roster of approx 40 artists from the 80s and they put together a show with a selection of their artists.

The highlight for me was Jimmy Sommerville with special guest Sarah Jane Morris doing “Don’t Leave Me This Way”.

I have photographed Bloc Party 4 times now. This time it was lead singer Kele on his solo tour.

Not really my kind of music but he is a good entertainer. He picked on a bored looking guy and said that he would give him $10 for ever hit he recognised. I dont know how much out of pocket he was at the end of the night.

I was lucky to see Pendulum perform at the Electric Ballroom, Camden in 2007. Now in 2010, they are stepping up to Wembley Arena.

Went over to photograph a heath fire at Chobham Ranges that has been burning for 3 days. It is a live military firing range so the fire bridage can only fight it from the edges due to the presence of live shells.

January is always quiet so this is the first post of the new year. Henry Rollins doing his spoken word show at the Royal Festival Hall.

The last time I was at the Forum was 20 years ago for Texas – it was the Town and Country Club then. This time was for The Horrors and their ‘dark’ show.

Ace coming onstage half an hour late and a snow storm makes for an interesting evening.

Hands is one of favourite albums of 2009 so I really happy to get a pass for her London show.

I cant think of a better way to spend the evening than photographing the gorgeous Puppini Sisters and it was only 10 minutes from home. The set had been built for the local pantomine so it looked odd with a backdrop of pirate ships but it made for interesting photos.

This was a hard show to shoot as Ian spent a lot of the time at the front of the stage beyond the reach of the lights.

October had been renamed Bloctober by Bloc Party. This was the second last show at Readings Rivermead Leisure Centre.

First night of 3 at The O2 for the reformed Spandau Ballet. Tickets sold out in 20 mins !!

Girl Guide Big Gig at Wembley Arena to celebrate 100 years of the Guides. Lots of acts including JLS, Tinchy Stryder, Saturdays, Scouting For Girls, Pixie Lott, Chipmunk, Alphabeat and Alexandra Burke;

It has been reported this morning that Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has died. I was lucky enough to photograph Boyzone at Wembley back in May.

Richard Hawley (with special guest Lisa-Marie Presley) – unfortunately I wasnt there when she took to the stage.

I love a challenge and the lighting for this show was a challenge. The first picture gives you an idea of how little light there was.

This was a challenge – there was no pit and not much light. Paloma is a colourful dresser so at least that makes for more interesting pictures.

“Thank You For The Music” was a BBC Radio 2 tribute to Abba at Hyde Park in front of 36,000. It was hosted by Chris Evans and broadcast live on Radio 2. The ‘headlining’ act was Kylie along with other acts such as Lulu, Chaka Khan, The Feeling, Nerina Pallot and many more.

The last time I photographed Rodrigo Y Gabriela was at Guilfest 3 years. They are now promoting their new album.

Quick trip up the M40 to the Oxford Academy to photograph Ian Brown on a small warm-up tour before his Reading Festival appearance. Nice small venue with a large pit. Hopefully photograph Ian again on his full tour later in the year.

Bit quiet this month so catching up on admin. I have been going through some of my published pictures. Recently had pictures published in The Telegraph, Sun and Sunday Star. One of my Boyzone pictures has been used in Closer magazine.

The weather forecast for this gig was heavy showers and it seemed that the Met Office were wrong. That was until the Pussycat Dolls appeared on stage and the heavens opened. Good show though.

Day two of the Betfair Weekend at Ascot Racecourse and its Supergrass.

As part of the Betfair Weekend of racing at Ascot Racecourse, there are holding a concert after each days racing. Friday night was classical night. Support was from Blake and Natasha Marsh – the main act was Britains Got Talent act Escala.

And now for something completely different, again. Rapper The Game at Hammersmith Apollo;

Spent the weekend working at Guilfest. Great family friendly festival. The same photographers seem to cover the festival so it always great to catch up with old friends.

The headliners were Motorhead, Brian Wilson and The Happy Mondays. My favourite act was The Lightning Seeds – set full of simple pop songs. It was the only time over the weekend where I had chance to stop and watch the band.

I wont bore you with all of the 3000+ photographs I took of 25+ bands, so here are a couple of my favourites.

A music photographers normal attire is jeans and a t-shirt. For the Henley Festival, the dress code is Black Tie but you can get away with a suit as long as you wear a tie !!

Another gig with a slightly unusual shooting position. We had to shoot crouched down to one side of the stage. I always seem to get cramp !!

Yes and we did get to hear him do “Oh Carol”.

One of the main challenges when photographing bands is the position from where we take photographers. Normally we have access to a pit at the front. For Seal, as it was a seated concert, we were told that we were to shoot from the mixing desk at the back.

When we get there we are escorted to the front, told to pick a spot and to stay there. Some of the audience werent to impressed with the idea of a bunch of photographers standing in there way. I left the main group and went over to the other side and crouched in the aisle about 4 rows back. This wasnt too bad apart from the late comers trying to get to their seats.

Seal performed Killer as the second song and everyone stood up which made it a bit easier to get pictures.

Despite only being a two-piece, the Ting Tings pack a punch. Fantastic live show and a great sound.

I love photographing McFly. They are full of energy and put some of the ‘serious’ bands to shame in terms of performance – and they do play live.

This was one gig I was looking forward to. Basement Jaxx were in town for 2 sell-out gigs at the Roundhouse. The start was delayed as everyone seemed to turn up late. The band were full of energy; different singers for each song along with a change of costume.

My local Tesco is one of only two in the country not to open on a Sunday which means it is often used to film commercials. The latest one stars Fay Ripley (Cold Feet) and Mark Addy (The Full Monty). I am not sure what the plot was but there was an hot air balloon basket suspended from a crane.

Down with Dappy and the Dubz tonight at the Shepherds Bush Empire – does that make me sound old ?

If I am honest, I dont know much of David Byrnes solo work – only his Talking Head work. Also, I have never been to the Royal Festival Hall. Put the two together and you get tonights job. Very simple lighting and David was dressed in white so no colour cast to worry about. The show started at 7:30pm meant a welcome early finish.

This is the second time that I have photographed Bloc Party – the first time was at Ally Pally. This time at Olympia. They seem to have a preference for large standing venues. The band were good and some good lighting enabled me to get some nice shots. Not sure about the venue though, it did sound a bit echoy.

I got to the O2 for Simply Red and met up with the rest of the photographers. Our escort turns up and promptly announces that we will be taking pictures from the stage – thats a new experience for me. We were split into two groups and took our positions on the front corners of the stage. The first picture below is the view from the stage.

The last time I photographed The Rifles was in Reading back in May 2006 – the BBC used my photographs here. The crowd was lively then – this time there was beer being thrown around !!

I had a phonecall on Friday from my agency asking if I wanted to go and photograph the XFactor live show at Wembley Arena. No problems, until I realised shortly afterwards that there was a small matter of the Carling Cup final next door at Wembley Stadium.

I got there early to take some pictures of the crowds along Wembley Way. The two sets of fans started to get a bit too close to each other so the police decided to take some action to prevent trouble. The resulting photo was published in The Guardian.

Coming home covered in fake blood, it can mean only one thing – Lordi is in town.

The fantastically named Emmy The Great (real name Emma Lee-Moss) played Reading last night. She has been hotly tipped for 2009 and you can read a review of the album at The Times.

Went over to Woolworths in Staines to photograph Sir Cliff at a book signing. It was not the easiest job I have ever done – lots of people and not a lot of time or space.

Spent yesterday evening at Twickenham photographing REM. Michael Stipe is a great front man, lots of energy and throwing plenty of shapes.

Went over to Newport to photograph the Manic Street Preachers. Who said music photography was easy; overs 4 hours driving 250 miles for 15 minutes of photography. Anyway, had some fun with these pictures and created a couple of black and white version – brings back memories of being in the darkroom at college.
